Signed by the world's greatest ever player - Brazil and New York Cosmos legend Pelé , and the PFA's Gordon Taylor. The shirt was made to celebrate the PFA's centenary in 2007, and to mark the long standing friendship between Pelé and Gordon Taylor the CEO of the Professional Footballers' Association. They met when both playing in the North American Soccer League, Pelé for New York Cosmos and Taylor for the Vancouver Whitecaps - hence the shirt with the two club's team colours that was produced.
Pelé is widely regarded as one of the best football players of all time. Voted Football Player of the Century by the IFFHS International Federation of Football History and Statistics. French weekly magazine France-Football consulted their former "Ballon D'Or" winners to elect the Football Player of the Century: Pelé came in first position. The International Olympic Committee named Pelé the "Athlete of the Century". In his career he scored 760 official goals, 541 in league championships, making him the top scorer of all time. In total Pelé scored 1281 goals in 1363 games. In his native Brazil, Pelé is hailed as a national hero.
Pelé began playing for Santos at 15, Brazil at 16 and won his first World Cup at 17. He stayed with Santos for almost two decades until 1974, winning the 1962 and 1963 Copa Libertadores, the most prestigious club competition in South American football. In 1975 he joined the New York Cosmos and led them to the 1977 NASL championship in his third and final season with the club. He is now Honorary President of the New York Cosmos. Pelé is the all-time leading scorer of the Brazil national football team and is the only footballer in the world to have three World Cup winning medals.
Gordon Taylor OBE is a former footballer who played as a winger. After retirement he became chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association. He played for Bolton Wanderers, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Bury - and also spent the 1977 close season playing in the North American Soccer League for the Vancouver Whitecaps. Since 1980 he has worked full-time for the PFA and is a member of FIFA's football committee.
Afghan Heroes have been donated this official Professional Footballers Association framed and signed shirt, which has been valued and is estimated to be worth up to £10,000. This shirt was made as part of a collection spanning from the inaugural PFA awards in 1974 to 1997 when the PFA celebrated their centenary.
Only four sets of the shirts have been made, or will ever be made:
• The PFA own the first set • The second set was sold at an auction held at the PFA Centenary banquet in Manchester, with the proceeds contributing towards the PFA's charitable causes • Shirts from the third set were presented by the PFA to the respective Footballer of the Year. • The fourth and remaining set is now being offered for public raffle with proceeds going to charities.
The shirt is made in halved colours of the player's club and country, wire woven gold and silver official Club badges matched with the official badge of their Country. It has the winning player’s signature digitised and embroidered on the shirt between the badges, mounted on gold board within an archival quality sealed frame above a printed player profile personally signed by the Footballer of the Year. Two photographs; one portraying the player in match action, the other a portrait of the footballer receiving the PFA trophy. To complete the framed shirts the logos of the PFA Centenary year and the manufacturers 4 Club & Country Ltd are included. The shirt has a separate certificate of authenticity signed by Gordon Taylor, CEO of the PFA.
